Welcome to the online lyric/liner notes for all of my CD projects. Songs always sound better when they are sung, but sometimes it is helpful to read the words, the textual "flesh" that helps make each song speak. Enjoy!

TELL ME
  • Stranger in a Strange Land (Drop D - Capo 4)

Petrol and Steel asphalt-slick wheels on the highway Car engine grinds Interstate whines going my way Wheels turn again it's the American Dream To be lonely and free but things aren't what they seem Is there a lesson to pay for this twin yellow stream flowing on and on...

    Chorus:
I'm a stranger stranger in a strange land And I can't stop to even hold your hand And I don't think I don't even understand What it means to be a stranger stranger in a strange land

Aluminum wings cylinder clings to the runway Twin engines hum my sense are numb and the ground slips away People move here people move there at inhuman speeds we hurtle through air And the Earth slips away and we don't seem to care I know why

Land lies so still as the occupants spill past the meaning Of mountains of mist a dammed river hiss signals greeting Charred out remains are a cruel legacy And the truth lies so close in the ground beneath our feet Are we sure that we know what it means to be truly free

  • Light in the Storm (Standard - Capo 3)

I set sail for a distant shore couldn't see the land no more in the darkest night you're my light…

The wind grew strong and the sky grew dark I trembled feared I miss the mark in my fear and shame your light came…

My small ship shook almost lost control to the raging in my soul then light like dawn all fear gone…

I awoke to a quiet sea wind and waves had left me free no I knew to seek the true

Turned my little boat around set a course for solid ground my flight was from the night my flight was towards the light…

    I set sail for a distant shore…

  • A Story (Standard - Capo 3)

Tell you a story 'bout a boy and a girl who both grew up in a most ideal world a world full of smoke and a world full of mirrors and they did not recognize or understand all the fears that confound the soul and mixes you up while you're lying by the road with a pain in your side and a guilt in your heart that you just cannot hide

Tell you a story about a woman and a man who promised each other they'd hold out for land and the sea between them bubbled and it boiled and it soon crept inside of their work and their toil and the blueness the coolness the cruelness of the sea which captured his laughter and disturbed her sleep he awakened in silence and fear and alarm and realized that if she should come to harm that he was 3,000 miles away and all he could do was keep watch and pray

Tell you a story about two hearts made one by the bond of long-distance communication about thoughts that were shared over trans-ocean wire and letters that were sent and they burned with the fire that tempered the distance with memories past and hope for the future where one day at last the two hearts would meet in the dawn of the day and both boy and girl held distance at bay

  • Tell Me (Standard)

Tell me what you're thinking tell me what you see tell me maybe you might find you're alot like me but maybe if that ain't the case I do believe its true that you could learn from me and I could learn from you, too...

Tell me what you're thinking tell me what you feel tell me what shakes you what really awakes you tell me what you feel is really real tell me what makes you angry tell me what makes you sad tell me about what moves you and the dreams that you often have I have them too yes I do

Tell me why you're laughing tell me why the smile I must say I've had a bad day and I need to sit down and relax for a while tell me why you're grinning tell me why the fun what's that you say your lover's home to stay or your wife has just given birth to your first born son or daughter or maybe twins maybe triplets

Tell me why're you crying tell me why the tears could it be that you and me we share the same terrible fears about life and love and growing old and what happens when we die and why when we meet true beauty all we can do is shake our heads and ask why

Tell me do tell me true tell me do

Tell me why're you praying why're you on your knees what is that you're saying who do you think you're trying to appease is this god a friend of yours one who might understand or is this the god who gets all the blame for the killing of the people in the foreign lands

Tell me what you're thinking tell me what you see could it be that you and me we are part of the same big family tell me what you're thinking and I'll tell you to be fair and then just maybe you and me can make some sense of this world we both share

  • Heart to Heart (Standard - Capo 1)

We met on some deserted day quiet in my soul summer sun a taste of salt and sand between my toes you smiled through me with second sight talked of life on a moonlit night arm and arm and hand in hand on summer's cool and shifting sand the seasons change two arrange together

Autumn colors leaves fall down a sweater keeps us warm orange and red turn to dead with coming winter's storm you pull me down in leaves we pile we touch and I can feel you smile the taste of apple in your mouth and we can hear the geese fly south the seasons pass two can last together

Winter of our discontent ice surrounds our home frosty stare in day's gray light you'd rather be alone I hesitate to be apart buy give you time to warm your heart then find me by the fire side and lose me in your ocean eyes the seasons pass two can last together

I don't know any reason just excitement hope and fear you and me are a mystery like the seasons of the year

Spring the heart is back to bloom and winter fades with fire smell of lilac in your hair the air tastes of desire one on one don't dribble past but take me on that love might last and late at night we count the stars catch fireflies in glassy jars the seasons change two arrange together...

  • Do and Say (Standard - No Capo)

Joey came down from the hills one day fire burning in his eye joey said he has just killed a man and wasn't even sure quite why his sister broke down and cried

Joey's sister hid him under the basement stairs tiny room with no view the law showed up at her door that night she said of Joey she had no clue and she didn't know what to do

Why do we do all the things we do and why do we say what we say Some can understand and lend a hand to those who are burning with hate To those who choose to run away

Joey slipped out of town at first light head down Las Cruces way His hands were clenched into fists so tight his sister didn't know what to say He's probably still running today

  • Bovine Revolution (Standard - Capo 3)

Down in farmer brown's barn yard I hears there's a stir flapping of wings and a rustling of fur seems the cows they are restless angry and blue tired of sitting round without any clue gonna organize protest raise a collective moo oh my it's a bovine revolution

Farmer brown he is puzzled and scratching his head seems the bulls have joined the cows now and their eyes are seeing red watch out for cow community bovine solidarity the barnyard could blow up in total cow anarchy oh my its a bovine revolution

Bovine revolution cows gonna draft a constitution that says they're tired of being milked in the wee morning hours fed up being fed only hay they want armchairs in the meadow and sleep stalls with showers oh my its a bovine revolution

Farmer brown well his head's in a spin does he stand firm or does he give in 'cause the grievance list is long and the milk's going sour and all the barnyard animals are chanting cow power it's udderly frightening any man would be a coward in the face of this bovine revolution

The cows elect a spokesbull gonna preach the good word the barnyard quiets down so his big bad bullish voice can be heard ask not what your cows can do for you we claim we are hear to help bovine brothers and sister in chains we are here to put an end to this collective pain unite cows join the bovine revolution

All across the nation cows communicating barnyards everywhere bovines are congregating passing out flyers and raising their voice and preaching liberation bovines have a choice emancipate yourselves read Thoreau, Gandhi, Dubois oh my its a bovine revolution moo

  • All I Want (Standard - Capo 1)

Rambling river call out to me as you head towards the shining sea I don't know where you're bound for as you ramble on wild and free and yet we try to tame you and tell you where you should go I don't know

Age old tree reach out to me as you spread your limbs up high we come and go but you continue to grow as your mother calls you forth to die and yet we take you down you cried out without a sound as you fell some say it's just as well

All I want is a river next to which to ramble all I want is a tree that I can climb a shining sea fishes swimming grinning singing come on lose the laundry jump right in let's make some time

Shining sea sing rhythmically as your waves stroke the sandy shore the sun and you sing in harmony on moonlit nights I hear you roar and yet we stain the heart of you and taint your vastness blue I know not what to do

  • This Girl (Standard - Capo 1)

She smiles that smile starts deep down in her soul warm like the sun warms up my dark world I say hold on boy keep your head above water this girl want to love her like no other

She laughs that laugh washes over me like a wave a laugh meant for healing a laugh that was meant to save me I say hold on boy keep your head above the water this girl want to love her like no other

Her eyes sparkle in the light they seem to say boy everything will be all right and that's ok 'cause now we're gonna be together this girl want to hold her for forever

  • Reminders of You (Standard - Capo 1)

I could sing what I saw this morning dawn crept up into view domes sky burns and the whole world turns around colors green red and blue but to sing without including your smile is something I just couldn't the things that I've seen here and there in between only remind me of you yes they do yes they do remind me of you

I could sing what I saw this noonday blue sky wrapped around me dolphins dance and I'm in a trance from the sun and the sand and the sea but to sing without including your laugh is something that I just couldn't do the things that I've seen here and there in between only remind me of you

It's been twenty long days and twenty long nights since I've seen your smiling face in the candle light now what am I supposed to do every time that I turn around reminded of you

I could sing what I saw this evening twilight washes me clean moon on the bay and the end of the day and the night sky stars seldom seen but to sing without including your sweet kiss is something that I just couldn't do the things that I've seen here and there in between only remind me of you...

  • Between the Raindrops (Standard - Capo 2)

Water kicks up by the wheel on the road and the rooster tail splash I feel my anger explode at the steel and the rubber and the flash going by and the sullen gray mass of a cold winter sky

Dance between the raindrops walking in the rain find out where the world ends maybe not come home again dance between the rain drops sun is going hide her face see my own reflection on the road gonna find my place

Rain feels good on my warmed-over skin and the heat beneath the street is covered with the thin line of stone and crushed bone and the wet beneath my soul in the air there's a chill in the sky there's a hole

Boots kicking up my mud my face picking up smile I can't do this all day but I can do it for a while outside is empty on this cold and rainy day the world is my ocean I'm gonna jump in and play

  • On My Way (Standard - Capo 1)

Catch myself in the middle of the day deep in thought about how I'm going to make my way through dark and barren fields a mere shadow of their autumn yield but they welcome me home just the same

Going to my home again just returned from traveling my friend and I don't know how we could get by (keep dry) without that well worn path hat welcomes me home on my way home

For a moment I find myself in yesterday leaves on the lawn and a little boy at play despite the dirt and the tears and the shame mom and dad understand life's game and they welcome me home just the same

Climb many mountains swam in the deep blue sea lived on my own knowing what it's like to be free still though wherever I may roam I find myself sometimes longing for home and I'm welcome there so I'm on my way

  • Be Here (CGCGCGE - Capo 5)

What can I say when the day is gray and the clouds come without a sound

And what an I say when the rain falls to the earth and the darkness gathers round

That's when I know… you will be here

What can I do when the well runs dry and the love is no longer there

And what can I do when the tears I cry fall and the world just doesn't care

And what can I feel when the songs I've sung fall on deafened ears

And what can I feel when the words lose their meaning and fade with the graying of the years

REMEMBER THE DAY
  • Remember the Day (Standard - Capo 3)

I remember the day the rain came to town it clung to the branches and froze on the ground and I was there and you were nowhere to be found I remember the day the rain came to town

And I remember the day the wind came to town it howled up the Charles knocked that chopper down silver colored ashes mingled with the drowned I remember the day the wind came to town

In this eastern town by the river by the sea there is no you seems to be only me and the ice sits still (breaks up) in the river and in the bay airplanes (busses...subways) rumble over noise of a city day I remember that day so well

Left our warm home in the desert under blue sky like the sea new found land and I understand where you're born is not where you end up to be

I remember the day the sun came to town burned up the branches warmed up the ground crooks cornered the bank truck good guys shot them down I remember the day the sun came to town

  • Skipping Stones (Standard - Capo 1)

Pick up a stone roll it 'round in my hand it feels like it came from some foreign land but I know its the rock beneath me like I know you're not there to greet me when the sun comes falling down and the stars light up this small town skipping stones across the water throwing songs across the sea no long distance wire can hold the sparks that set on fire music that burns between you and me

There's a lonely sky in the west tonight sun falls on down and the fire burns bright in your eyes when you left me in the skies when they cleft me of all reason save one I've gotta dance with you in the sun

  • Little Brother (DADGAD - Capo 3)

I see you in the photo smile and light behind your eye but you can turn it off at will like there's a part of you that dies and I hear our mother tell me there is anger in your brow and though I am so far away I want to be with you now little brother

I look into your eyes I see some of you in me I often wear a face of stone to mask my fragility those times when I have laughed when I felt my heart would break those times when mom and dad would give and all I'd do was take little brother

I see my shadow 'cross your door so many years between us you know I've been there too before and little brother we all grow differently though I am happy here I hope you won't follow me

Ask yourself two questions who am I who do I want to be fitting these together is the challenge the mystery and the best that you can do is try hard every day and even when you fail I'll still love you anyway little brother

And I hope that you'll grow roots buried deep in family clay I hope that you will do when others only say I hope you'll live a life that's open with a trusting heart that's true and learn to love the world and all the people around you little brother

  • Curve Ball (DADGAD - Capo 3)

Under bright noonday sun I stand on the mound the day is hot and windless I don't hear a sound but the voice of my teacher he is one-third my size Chris Cosgrove is his name he is a pitcher he is wise

Wrap your fingers 'round the stitches bend your wrist just so now wind yourself up and let the leather go at the very last moment if you throw your pitch right the ball will duck the batter it will break low it will break inside

Throwing the curve ball in the warm summer sun one part art one part science a little sweat mounds of fun throwing the curve ball where does the time go I'm reminded of a boy who I once knew long ago

Just two years ago baseball's favorite son lost the father who coached him death hit a home run Chris tells me this he says it matter of fact and I realize right then you can never go back

  • Packed Boxes (Standard - Capo 4)

Dust the ledges sweep the floor tape up cardboard by the door paintings come down off the wall treasures pile up in the hall we collect books shelf by shelf take them down and tape them up kitchen dishes cups and plates photos of our wedding day candles lanterns wax and brass all have lighted moments past packed boxes standing one by one packed boxes our time here now is done packed boxes neatly in a row packed boxes what do these boxes know house is quiet walls are bare smell of dust sits in the air cardboard's captured our time here we'll soon unpack and reappear

  • Anyway (Standard - Capo 1)

Early in the morning I'm lying in my bed I feel the radiance burning you're a vision in my head I heard you say you love me I do believe it's true through dust and tears and darkness I'll find my way to you

In the searing of the mid day heat is beating down asphalt road has melted and grass has turned to brown you asked me to the river and wash me in your smile and smooth away confusion that's collected over miles

And I know that when I look into your eyes and you see right through my tattered old disguise and you smile and you say that's ok I'm growing older but you love me anyway

Late into the evening we're lying in our bed I feel the stars are burning this vision in my head its then you really love me it's then I know its true through raging river's torrent I'll find my way to you

  • Grammy's Song (Standard - Capo 4)

They found her out walking out strolling the grounds she said I'm looking for Charlie I'm sure he's around I know that he's up there around the next bend come walk with me a while my friend

I cannot find Charlie where did he go he's going to be late for his dinner you know we must walk down the hall and his food will get cold and his legs are not strong any more he's growing old

When two hearts are one and one goes away the other half is left to face a new day when two hearts are one and then one is gone the other half alone must carry on

I still remember her in the still early morning she appeared in the hallway without any warning and squeezed juice from oranges that she'd cut in half and I'd sit on her lap and she'd snort when she'd laugh

Now she's past her prime of that it is plain 'cause she can't quite remember faces and names and her orange-juicing days are over and through but she can still snort and smile when she's talking to you

BOTTOM LINE PROPHETS
  • Hopeful Song (DADGAD - Capo 3)

I cover my heart lift up my head the sullen sky is heavy with rain a wrapped plastic paper falls on my driveway the news that someone else is in pain the month is December the season is winter the leaves have turned to earth on the grass I put on my jacket turn up the collar shudder hoping that this feeling will pass

This is a hopeful song whether right or wrong you can sing along this is a hopeful song

The buildings are towers of steel window granite and they huddle over sharp angled streets people pass by intent on their journey only seldom do our eyes ever meet kids dressed for cold small mittened fingers laughing at their breath frozen white crisp salty smell of pretzel street vendors buttoned down for a cold winter's night

I wander the streets torn man sings falsetto and asks brother can you spare me a dime I reach in my pocket slip him two lincolns mutter hope this helps you through a hard time he smiles back at me gives me his blessing shuffles singing back on his way under cover of crowds horns from the taxis I thought I heard him quietly say

  • Starting Over (Standard: Capo 5)

We first met in the winter of '74 me just back from my tour in the great Asian war in the jungle my heart took a predictable turn I learned not to care any more but you were so young in your unifirmed smile you poured me some coffee you listened a while your gentle firm hands and the blush on your cheek I stayed an hour then a day then a week was no ring on your finger so I took a chance and asked and you answered with a slow sideways glance that your husband found work that he'd left with the train and he wouldn't be back here again

So put on waltz music turned the lights way down low slide off that diner stool dance with me slow whisper sweet somethings in my eager ear you can speak soft and low so no one else can hear starting over let's dance my dear

So I found me a job to burn the sick from my chest and I rented a place just three blocks to the west and I came here for coffee I came most every morning and as the world turned my heart grew again and you asked me to lunch and I asked you to dinner and we talked through the dark about hope about sin and on evenings and week-ends we walked the green hills around town and then one day up there you laid me down so I found us two rings at the corner gem store slipped one on to your finger that night after work the wedding proved small it was a tiny affair just the priest you and me all were there

So we bought that small house on that street by the river there are times late at night when my dreams make me shiver you curl up beside me slide up so near whisper real soft in my ear and every fourth of July on our little back lawn you light up a sparkler put your dancing shoes on and move in a waltz time move through the dark move me down deep with that spark

  • Bottom Line Prophets (DADGF#D - Capo 4)

I saw Buddha by the bodhi tree he'd given up the world born of wealth of highest caste gave up his gold his silk his pearls I saw Buddha under bodhi tree relaxed in meditation his hand was outstretched knowingly he breathed renunciation why do we need our prophets is there something we don't know an emptiness a hollow place that's hidden in our soul

I saw Jesus walking by the sea follow footprints in the sand come to bring the dead new life loaves and fishes in his hand I saw Jesus die on Calvary spear wound in his side love your neighbor as yourself he said god loves you can't hide why do we kill our prophets what is it that we fear from a boy born in stable straw on a desert night so clear

Mohammad had his angel who spoke to him in dreams and Moses had a bush that burned a tree's not always what it seems as this world's imploding I look 'round for a sign to quench with fire our icy thirst turn the water into wine

I saw Elvis run up heartbreak hill dressed in sequined polyester April day in Boston town end of spring semester must have fled from that hotel where all the hearts are broken I sent him back there out of breath gave him my last transit token why do we follow prophets with pevlis shaking sneers who amplify our brokenness and distract us from our fears

  • Fisherman's Story (Drop D: Capo 2)

Cast a glance over the smooth and glassy surface mountain lake with grassy banks cut deep and wide my friend Dudley gives a nod and points with my reel and rod and says there is where the big ones hide just then a ripple breaks the surface and another right behind with a steady hand and eye Dudley ties on our tiny fly gives a ten to one quick flick and lets' the reel unwind

In this fisherman's story an angler's tall-taled tail of a multicolored mystery with fins and gills and tail

In this fisherman's story it happened just this way at the end of the telling the big one got away

Dudley's twelve years old this summer and swimming hard to stay afloat in school but when it comes to catching fish he is no fool

And then the monster breaks the surface and dives down deep to test our will this fish is plenty smart but Dudley knows his art and let's him play out his strength until the line is still so we reel him to the shoreline hold him up we hoist him up for show he's beautiful to see but we stoop and set him free 'cause the best part of the catch is the letting go

  • Breadbaking Blues (Standard - Capo 1)

In the heat of the four o'clock sun you and I are gonna have some fun you wear that dress fits you loose around the waist I'll bring that recipe hungry for a taste of you

Meet me in the kitchen in the late afternoon don't forget the flower mixing bowl and spoon a bit of honeyed heat to make the yeast rise then need the dough so slow what a nice surprise

Kitchen floor is warm beneath our toes our eyes meet and merge and you and I know as we heat up the loaf the curtains catch fire roll out stand up lay down in this over of desire

And later on when the baking is through we've cooked the bread and eaten and the evening stars are new you speak in other tongues you say c'est bon pain I'm a baker who knows we can break bread again

  • Windhorse (DADGBD - Capo 3)

Grandpa it's your grandson here it's been too many years smoke and shoot pool down at the beer hall and drink in the hand writing on the wall the family keeps your name since you've been gone we're still together here still hanging on grandma burns the candles at your shrine and curses soldiers who took your life

And I remember the story you told me as we were walking up that mountain pass and your prayer wheel is still spinning freedom peace may one day come at last strap your prayer onto a wind horse wind horse back is strong to bear your cry strap your prayer on to a wind horse wind horse will bear it up into the sky the world will listen when wind horses fly

Guns and tv cameras rule the day but we've learned to resists in our own way the new law said you carried out a crime but all you did was hang one tiny sign and cousing pema she's become a nun and one day just like you refused to run raised up her lone voice in city square they jailed her beat her badly for her dare

One million of us gone in fifty years one hundred thousand more have fled from here walking over mountains made of stone flee the snows of our ancestral home

  • First Key (Drop D: Capo 5)

The first key of love is the melody of the single self she moves in up tempo time built on a major scale she's got internal rhyme so when she blends herself together with his own special tune they're making two part harmony their song fills up the room and that's the first key of love

The first key of love gently unlocks the heart no need to slam or shove each stands at the other's door and is invited in room by room floor by floor no need to break in and steal like a thief in the night no build a house of heart together with two doors that snug tight and that's the first key of love

Some say that we are all islands a single soul surrounded by sea but then two build a bridge two make a wish two together find the first key of love

The first key of love found in the world around found in the sky above that one and one is greater then two climb a mountain peak only improves the view and when you both reach the top and both look out into space I bet you both might have that same sort of smile on your face and that's the first key of love

  • Car Phone (Acapella)

You blew by me on the highway today in a car too expensive to mention you were swerving from side to side I tried to get your attention but you were just a bit preoccupied with one hand on the wheel and all of us drivers we are terrified I'm here to tell you just how we feel

Hang up and drive take that phone out of your ear for we are traveling down this road in fear I'm sure that call could wait 'til later we'd all stay alive if you just hang up and drive

Why must you reach out and touch someone at speeds that were not made for talking you put my car and me in jeopardy when you let your fingers do the walking are the auto rates free on at and t is there a better buy on MCI if you don't mind I'll just sprint on behind my car and I don't want to die

  • Dust on the Ocean (Stegner's Song) (Standard - Capo 5)

You grew up in western towns first fifteen years never settled down nomad's ghost haunts the land of this prairie child grew up under open sky grassy sea always asking why world was made of motion restless and wild

Tell me where's my home will I forever roam I am restless I am wandering like dust on the ocean

My father was a gambler he was a big rock candy rambler looking for that life that is easy and free my mother was a nester and she married a man who would test her and I knew her pain cause she never had a chance to be

I took my licks and I went to school books took me places I never knew married a writer and pages were torn from our past the golden gate beckoned and the dram always burned uncovered our history and soon we all learned of our bittersweet days and hope that might last

You grew up in western towns for sixty years you wrote it down nomad ghosts haunt the pages of this prairie boy born into a world full of motion but you managed to show your devotion to the land that you loved through the anger and the pain and the joy

  • Punctuation People (Standard - Capo 3)
